‘딸에 대하여’ by Kim Hye-jin, translated into English as ‘Concerning My Daughter’ by Jamie Chang (I read the German translation, ‘Die Tochter,’ by Ki-Hyang Lee) is a book about homophobia, aging, and dying in South Korea.
The story follows the daily life of an elderly caregiver. She is estranged from her daughter who lives a life she cannot and will not accept: no proper job (she is an adjunct at a university), no husband and children (she is a lesbian living with her partner). When her daughter runs out of money, she and her partner have to move in with her.
As much as I liked the book, I didn't like the translation. I hope the English version is better.
