‘Dschinns’ by Fatma Aydemir is a German book (English: 'Djinns') about an immigrant family from Turkey and their struggles with life in Germany and in general.
Set in 1999, it begins with Hüseyin in his new condo in Istanbul. After 30 years of hard work in Germany, he finally got this condo and a well-deserved retirement. And a heart attack.
The story is told from his, his children’s, and his wife’s point of view, with one chapter for each person. Starting in 1999, each character tells their story, often going back to their childhood.
One of the best German books I've ever read! Also: lots of strong women and LGBTIQ+ representation!
CW: xenophobia, racism, suicide, suicidal ideation, depression, homophobia, conversion therapy, transphobia
