‘Min mor siger’ (English: ‘My Mother Says,’ German: ‘Meine Mutter sagt’) by Stine Pilgaard is the Danish author’s debut and set in Copenhagen.

The narrator’s girlfriend just left her and she has to move out of the apartment. She goes back to live with her father, a Pink Floyd-loving priest, and his wife. She’s heartbroken. She eats, drinks, and smokes. She can’t get herself to start writing her master’s thesis. And she tries to convince her love that leaving her is her life’s biggest mistake.

While her father spoils her through this difficult time, everyone else has advice for her: her mother, her doctor (who seems to be a therapist), her best friend Mulle.

Despite her heartbreak, the story is full of wit and very well written. In addition to the first-person narration of the story, the narrator associates freely in her ‘Monologues of a Sea Horse.’

CW: Most characters use derogatory terms for various marginalized groups.
