'The Essential Dykes to Watch Out For' by Alison Bechdel was originally published as a comic strip from 1983 to 2008.
The graphic novel follows the lives of a diverse cast of mostly LGBTIQ+ characters and how they navigate relationships and politics. Published regularly for over 25 years, it addresses the politics of the time and the changes in lesbian/LGBTIQ+ culture.
I particularly liked that it shows how inclusivity has developed within the lesbian community, for example in relation to bisexual and trans people. And although the novel is sometimes sad when it comes to world and personal drama, it's also hilarious at times. It was my first graphic novel and I really enjoyed it!
