‘The Paris Bookseller’ by Kerri Maher is based on the life of Sylvia Beach, the American who opened ‘Shakespeare and Company’ in Paris in 1919.
Knowing that it’s set in bohemian Paris and its open queer scene in the 1920s should be enough, but here’s a short summary:
The book is about Sylvia. The story follows her life with her partner Adrienne and her many interactions with writers you will recognize, particularly James Joyce (Sylvia published his ‘Ulysses’ when no one else would!), but also Gertrude Stein, Ernest Hemingway, the Fitzgeralds, Ezra Pound, and so many others of the Lost Generation.
This book was so good, I couldn’t put it down. And look at that cover!
