‘To Paradise’ by Hanya Yanagihara is brilliant. And I didn’t expect anything less from her.
The book is divided into three sections, all of which focus on sexuality, identity, and freedom. The stories are set in 1893, 1993, and 2093 New York City (and sometimes Hawai'i). And while we may recognize many things from our history books, other things are completely different, such as openly lived same-sex relationships in the 19th century.
The first two stories each take up a quarter of the book; the one set in the future takes up the second half. And while you might think that the author wrote that part in the last two years, she had almost finished it by the time the pandemic started.
I highly recommend this book 1000000000%! But if you can't read about pandemics right now: maybe wait a bit.
