‘Under the Udala Trees’ by Chinelo Okparanta is a moving account of Ijeoma’s live in the Nigeria, mostly from the 1960s to the 1980s.
Growing up during the Nigerian Civil War, Ijeoma is accustomed to suffering. But when her mother is forced to send her away, she finds comfort in another teenager, a girl named Amina. When they are discovered, Ijeoma's mother imposes a strict regime of Bible study, while Ijeoma interprets the Bible in a different way.
Living in a highly homophobic and patriarchal society, Ijeoma tries to find her way as a lesbian with quite feminist standards.
