San Marino
We visited San Marino on our road trip through Emilia-Romagna. And it was such a cute microstate! It's definitely worth a visit!
CITY OF SAN MARINO: The Capital
If you are in Emilia-Romagna, a visit to San Marino is so easy! We visited the capital, the Città di San Marino (locally known as Città), which is located on Monte Titano and will reward you with breathtaking views. The City of San Marino is perfect for a (half) day visit!

How to Get Here
We came by car, and it's probably the easiest way to get here. (Be warned, though: if you have a small car like our rental, you'll have to drive most of the way in second gear). There is also an hourly bus service from Rimini.

Things to Do

Walk Around
The views are breathtaking, the streets are beautiful. Just walk around and take it all in!

Piazza della Libertà and Palazzo Pubblico
Take a stroll around the Piazza della Libertà, the Liberty Square. Here, you'll find the Palazzo Pubblico, the city hall and official government building (we didn't go inside, though), and the Statua della Libertà, the Liberty Statue.

Basilica del Santo
The Basilica del Santo, also called the Basilica di San Marino, houses some relics of San Marino, the patron saint of San Marino. Don't forget to look up when inside!

Some Facts about San Marino

The official name is the Republic of San Marino, but it’s also known as the Most Serene Republic of San Marino.

San Marino is a microstate—it has a total area of only 61.2 square kilometers or 23.6 square miles and is home to about 33,600 people. This size makes it the third smallest country in Europe (the top 2 being Vatican City and Monaco) and the fifth smallest in the entire world!

The official language is Italian and the food is very similar to the Italian cuisine of this region.
Although the country is not part of the European Union, it uses the Euro as its currency.

San Marino legalized civil unions for queer couples in 2018. It also plans to allow the performance of same-sex weddings for foreign couples visiting the country, but this law would not apply to Sammarinese couples.
