‘Liebe ist gewaltig’ (~love is tremendous) by Claudia Schumacher is a story about domestic abuse, fighting for sanity, and self-love.
Juli grew up in a seemingly perfect family. Her parents are charming and slightly eccentric lawyers. Juli and her siblings are achievers. Everyone is successful. A happy family.
Or is it? Behind closed doors, a violent horror unfolds. Physical and emotional abuse dominate the lives of Juli, her siblings, and her mother. As an adult, Juli struggles to form healthy relationships, carry the weight of silence, and find her own voice.
Despite the heavy themes, the book is sharply written and emotionally powerful. It doesn't sensationalize the violence but gives Juli and other survivors the space and dignity they deserve.
CW: domestic violence, emotional abuse, child abuse, misogyny, gaslighting, trauma, suicidal ideation, homophobia (internalized and external), and substance use
