“Two-legs had specific ways of classifying the world that Yetu didn’t like. She remembered that, at least. They organized the world as two sides of a war, the two-legs in conflict with everything else.”
‘The Deep’ by Rivers Salomon (with Daveed Diggs, William Hutson, and Jonathan Snipes) is a novella set at the bottom of the ocean where the Wajinru live—descendants of enslaved women thrown overboard on the ships that brought them from the African continent. At the center of the story is Yetu, the Wajinru’s historian and the only Wajinru who remembers their entire history. Yetu shares it with the others once a year, before they forget it again—a history too horrible and traumatic to remember.
