She was the perfect reckless.

‘The Stars and the Blackness Between Them’ by Junauda Petrus is so sweet—and heartbreaking. And although it’s supposed to be a YA book, it’s not a typical YA story and is a wonderful read for adult readers as well!

Audre lives with her religious mother in Port of Spain, Trinidad. She's in love with Neri, the pastor's granddaughter. When they are caught by Audre's mother, everything changes for Audre.

Mabel lives in Minneapolis with a loving and caring family. She is confused about her feelings for Jada. But when Audre comes to Minneapolis to live with her father, everything changes for Mabel—and Audre.

Very low-key magic realism!

CW: homophobia, racism, violence, child abuse, terminal illness
